Designation of origin and geographical indication
A PDO / DOP (Protected Designation of Origin / Dominazione di Origine) covers the term used to describe foodstuffs which are produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognised know-how (such as Mozzarella di Bufala Campana).
A PGI / IGP (Protected Geographical Indication / Indicazione Geografica Protetta) indicates a link with the area in at least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation (such as Turrón de Alicante).
DOP & IGP can protect producers against misuse or imitation appear. The consumers would have more confidence on the registered products. Although the IGP conditions are less than DOP, the products still have high quality. DOP products are produced, processed and prepared in designated areas of origin. Therefore, it will be more expensive than IGP products.
